High Resolution Scans

For your viewing pleasure: high resolution scans of 367, 370, and 372.

This is a profile of Lincoln based on work by Saint-Gaudens. The preproduction time-frame of this issue was less than one month, from commissioning it to distributing it to post offices.

Trial essays of this stamp had pictures of a seal on it. That is, a seal from Alaska. But the Exposition folks didn't want to focus on cold, so Seward's portrait replaced the seal. See the Essays & Proofs album.

Although the Clermont and that sailing ship were never actually on the water together at the same time, there were replicas of both ships, I believe, sailing at the Hudson-Fulton Celebration.... (Remind me some day to animate the flags, smoke, and paddles on this scan just for the fun of it...). Here is the Essays & Proofs album.
